Reading IDE plugin signals without mistaking curiosity for habit | Field Notes

First-week spikes after an internal plugin launch look like success. Habit looks quieter and matters more for investment decisions.

Internal plugins often ship with announcement banners that drive a surge of opens. Application analytics that celebrate that week as “adoption” fund the wrong roadmap. We prefer cohorts: engineers who invoked a command on three separate calendar weeks, and engineers who uninstalled or disabled within fourteen days.

Those two groups tell different stories. Curiosity traffic should inform onboarding copy. Habit traffic should inform maintenance budget. Mixing them is how teams keep polishing a plugin that only three squads rely on while ignoring a dull utility that anchors daily review work.

When we audit developer tool usage inside engineering platforms, we ask sponsors which decision the plugin metrics must support. Investment, retirement, and training each need a different threshold—and none of them is “peak day one.”
